Leadership & Business Education in AI Age

We had the pleasure of interviewing Jennifer Chatman in the latest episode of Silicon Valley Tech Talks. Jennifer was recently appointed as the 16th Dean of the Haas School of Business at UC Berkeley. Jennifer has been associated with UC Berkeley faculty for over 30 years.

Brief highlight of our chat with Jennifer are following:

-Jennifer expressed her excitement and commitment to leading the Haas into its next chapter. She emphasized a strategic vision focused on elevating the school’s reputation, ensuring financial sustainability, and building on its core strengths, including innovation, AI, entrepreneurship, and sustainability.

-Jennifer highlighted the unique Defining Leadership Principles (DLPs)—Question the Status Quo, Confidence Without Attitude, Students Always, and Beyond Yourself—which shape the Haas culture and leadership style. These values are deeply integrated into teaching, student selection, and alums identity, with many graduates carrying them into their personal and professional lives.

-In terms of AI and innovation, Haas is a leader, with many faculty members already integrating AI tools into their teaching and research. The school offers 40+ AI-infused classes, a fast-tracked AI certificate program, and notable AI-driven student startups, including UC Launch winners.

-Entrepreneurship remains a core strength, supported by the new eHub and various accelerator programs like UC Launch and SkyDeck. Haas leverages a strong alum network, including successful entrepreneurs like Kevin Chu, to support and mentor students. Berkeley remains the world’s top university in producing venture-backed founders.
