Will access to global data for AI development affect geopolitical relationships? Countries might protect their data due to national security or other concerns, and may institute new regulatory measures in that context. How will the new global data paradigm impact everyday users?
In this short clip, Olaf J Groth, PhD, explains this. Olaf outlines the “cognitive triad” essential for AI development: compute power (e.g., chips), AI models, and data, with data becoming a key geopolitical and economic asset. As countries tighten control over their data for security reasons, international data sharing will become a focus of negotiation. Individuals must be more aware of how and where their data is used. While some data sharing (like for public health) may be necessary, people need tools that ensure privacy, agency, and trust in how their data is handled. Sharing data in an agency-assured way will lead to building a global data economy.
